Sanding process
Every professional uses a similar process with slightly different preferences and techniques across the board.
the aim of the game is to get the floor looking as flat as possible, which is something you cant often see until the floor has been coated, once it has a bit of shine every dint, drum mark and chatter left from the belt machine will reveal themselves, which most DIY enthusiasts have figured out the hard way.
The typical process, depending on the condition of the floor the first cut with the belt sander ranges from 24-60 grit, second, third and sometimes a fourth cut drops down to 80-100grit.
The edging is usually done after the first or second cut with the belt sander using generally grits of between 24-80 grit.
The fine sanding of 100-150 grit is done with a 16inch orbital sander to blend edges and rid of any scratch marks left from the belt sander and edger, a smaller orbital around the perimeter, corners hand scraped and finished with a triangular sander.
The use of multi head disc machines have increased in recent years and offer some advantages on certain types of floors.
